Q. Why did God create the heavens and the earth?

God created all that is seen and unseen. He separated light from darkness, and the sea from the land.

He built a beautiful garden, brought life-giving waters from above and below and populated it with luscious flora and fauna. Then He placed us in it.

But why?

Why was the Unmoved Mover moved to make anything at all?

This was the first question ever posed in the Book of Big Questions. And it may be the biggest ever asked.

A WORD ON THE WORD: The Hebrew word “BARA” (pronounced “baw-RAW”) is reserved exclusively for the handiwork of God, and carries no mention of pre-existing materials.

The Bible is quite good at leaving much unknown. It offers grand visions of what was, what is, and what might be, then provides little detail to support their weight.

"The secret things belong unto the LORD our God.”

We ask ourselves:
- Why would an omniscient God, possessor of everything who needs nothing, want to create anything?
- Was the creation of the heavens and the earth God’s ultimate demonstration of divine freedom?
- And yet, isn’t the asking itself a form of worship?

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

Glory: The radiant weight of the divine presence – the only thing that exists merely for itself.

And so again we ask, Why?

Why did God create the heavens and the earth?

There is only one answer.
